Buy solid core cardstock if possible. Otherwise you will need to color your edges with a sharpie to match. Unlike with the leafy and evergreen trees, where I like to make my trunks brown and the rest of the tree green, I love the one color spooky trees.

Taking it a notch up, Grier Rubeling has posted her Creepy Halloween tree on The Craft Crib. Grier shared the process details along with the pictures and it looks really easy to make. She used a steel fencing wire to form the tree trunk and made roots out of crumpled papers, then secured the stem and roots to the circular wooden base.

Reinforce the seal by screwing in one "L" bracket into the base of the plywood round and the tree trunk. Be sure to screw the bracket into the 1x3's.
