Photos NOT OK to edit. Apr 7, 2016. #1. Hi, I own an Canon EOS 40d with the dreaded Err 99 message. My camera works fine for approximately 5 or 6 shots, then I get the Err 99 message. In addition, the message tells me to power down and turn the camera back on. Upon following the instructions, the camera is fine for another 5 or 6 shots.

One of the more common ERR 99 causes is dirty lens-to-camera or battery contacts. I suggest while you have the batteries and such out of the camera that you turn it back off, then use a clean cloth, lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and carefully wipe all the contacts.

Reseting the continuous Numbering can sometimes fix the 999 and the 9,999 message. this can occour after you reach the 9,999 image range and or the folder numbering above 999.
