Funicular railways run in two sections from the edge of Lugano to Monte Brè, the scenic mountain above the lake basin and the vibrant city. The short lower section to Ruvigliana was opened in 1908, before the railway reached Monte Brè in 1912.

If you love funiculars then you'll probably enjoy the experience but the price of CHF27 return is really not worth it. You can get the number 12 bus from Lugano Centro to the village of Brè for CHF2.30. You can walk up from the village to the summit of Monte Brè.

Oct 2020. This was our second mountain in the Lugano region which we hiked. The hiking starts at the base of the mountain. The hike was though the forest with a lake view all the time. There were two passage along the hiking path where the trees were broken blocking the path but you can navigate with ease if you are sporty.

Living in Lugano, I often head to Monte Bré, both for work and for leisure. We especially enjoy watching sunsets at the side of the mountain overlooking the lake, or just climbing to the top and then down again. From there, for those who like to hike, you can reach Monte Boglia, which is located behind the city at about 1.5h walk (steep).

The boat ride from Lugano to Gandria takes 10-30 mins, depending on which boat you are on. Some boats make stops along the way. Monte Brè seen from the boat. If you want to return to your car, you may want to get off at the Cassarate stop, which is closest to the parking. Make sure your boat stops there, as not all do.

Rising dramatically above Lago di Lugano, the conical peak of Monte Brè (925m) is the trailhead for hiking and mountain-biking trails that afford wide-reaching views of the lake and stretch all the way to the Bernese and Valais Alps. Mountain bikes can be hired near the summit for Sfr30/40 for a half-/full day.

Monte Bre is within walking distance or short bus ride from many hotels in Lugano city. If you want to stay on the mountain, you could stay in the Bre village, about a 15 min walk from the mountain top. Perhaps Salotto Brè, a cute bed & breakfast, or Jolie Brè, an apartment that sleeps 4. If you are hiking, perhaps stay in Gandria on the lake.
