Virginia nasce in una famiglia circense: sua nonna, di origine abruzzese, era un'acrobata cavallerizza. Insieme ai suoi fratelli aveva anche un circo, il circo Preziotti. Poi negli anni '50 i suoi nonni fondarono il luna park dell'Eur a Roma, dove la Raffaele è praticamente cresciuta.
