Opened on the 14th June 1847, the North Woolwich Railway station was a crumbling, faded shadow of former glories when I visited it in 1980. A view looking towards the North Woolwich terminus station building, 1980

The station opened in 1847 as one terminus of the Eastern Counties and Thames Junction railway. It provided access to some of the docks as well as a connection with the Woolwich Ferry. The nearby Royal Victoria Dock opened in 1855, although the railway cut across the dock entrance and a swing bridge had to be built to carry it.

The Society regrets that the North Woolwich Old Station Museum closed at the end of November 2008. The Museum was originally established by the London Borough of Newham whilst the building was owned by the Passmore Edwards Museum Trust. See here for a brief note about the benefactor: http://www.hayle-pei.org.uk/shorthistory.htm

The old station building and down (northern) platform were acquired by the Passmore Edwards Trust and after renovation the Old Station Museum was opened by the Queen Mother in November 1984. The station closed temporarily on 29th May 1994 during the construction of the Jubilee Line (which doesn't serve North Woolwich) reopening on 29.10.1995.

The station was on the old North London line, opening in 1847 as the terminus of the railway with a grand building for the station. However, as the area declined, the station building closed in 1979, to be replaced by a much smaller "shed" next door, while the grand building was turned into a railway museum.

In 1979 the railway was refurbished and a new North Woolwich station was built just around the corner. The old building was given to a Trust and turned into a railway museum. After King George V DLR station opened, the railway line and the new station closed completely. Sadly the museum closed too in 2008.
