On June 22, 1986, President Thomas S. Monson created the 1,600th stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and announced a temple would be built in the Toronto area. In October of the following year, President Monson returned for the groundbreaking of the Toronto Ontario Temple.

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that the Toronto Ontario Temple will be renovated during an extended closure for approximately nine months, which is expected to begin in October 2023. The Toronto Ontario Temple was dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley in August 1990.

The Toronto Ontario Temple is the 44th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the 1st temple built in Ontario. Standing in a beautiful residential neighborhood in Brampton, a Toronto suburb about 20 miles west of downtown, the Toronto Ontario Temple is a sublime structure with a 105-foot spire rising elegantly from its rooftop. The temple is oriented east.

It was the second temple to be dedicated in Canada (after the Cardston Alberta Temple ), making it the first country in the world, outside the United States, to have two temples within its borders at the time of dedication.
