My experience with getting really good patterning is to etch deep enough to create topography. You really need some room between the top of the 15N20 and the bottom of the HC layers. I agitate my etch tanks (both the vinegar and the Ferric tank) with a fish tank bubbler. This dislodges the oxides as they form and accelerates the etch.

Submerge the part in the acid and let it sit for 15-30 minutes. It's not a strong acid so there's no rush. Just check the part and stop at the color you want. Rinse with hot water. Rub down with WD40 and steel wool to get the loose particles off. Then I like to seal it with boiled linseed oil (BLO).

Using new vinegar each time prevents the contaminants from entering the picture. acetic acid should not go bad and vinegar is said to last over 5 yrs. Not sure why your etch is taking longer with the vinegar since it's unused vinegar and should be able to be considered as new. Ed's right on the money with Ferric for etching - dilute that stuff.

Well, mustard contains vinegar. Actually, mustard is nearly all vinegar. Vinegar is acetic acid (usually about 5%), diluted with water. When applied to the blade, the acetic acid begins to (slowly) eat into the steel. This opens it up so that the water (in the vinegar) can rapidly oxidize (rust) it.

A couple are 440C and a couple others are made from a simmonds file and a nicholson as well. Is this the time to do it or should I wait for heat treat and temper?
