It is estimated that forests cover approximately one-third of the Earth's land. Forest biomes are divided into three broad categories: temperate, tropical and boreal forests.

Image by Dejo. There are lots of other plants besides trees in temperate forests. Understory shrubs like Gooseberry (watch out for spines!) and Blueberry are some tasty examples. There are also plants called forbs: small, non-woody, flowering plants, like lilies as well as orchids.

There are many different types of plants that live in the temperate rainforest biome. A few examples are the coastal redwood (above left), fireweed (above center), and western skunk cabbage (above right).

Temperate forest, vegetation type with a more or less continuous canopy of broad-leaved trees. They occur between approximately 25 and 50 degrees latitude in both hemispheres. Toward the polar regions they grade into boreal forests dominated by conifers, creating mixed forests of deciduous and coniferous trees.

Cattail ( Typha latifolia ): Cattail is a common plant of wetlands in the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. Cattail also has a variety of uses. The spring shoots can be cooked and eaten like a vegetable. The long leaves can be woven into mats and the seed fluff can make good insulation and fire-starting materials.

Temperate Rainforest Plants
A temperate rainforest is a forest that receives a high amount of rainfall and is located in a temperate region (i.e., between the tropics and the polar regions in both the north and south hemispheres).

In Europe, the temperate rainforests are found in Norway, Spain, Ireland, Scotland and Wales; and the coast of Croatia. Norwegian forests contain trees like ash, maple, oak, and conifers like spruce and pine. Spanish forests contain 5500 species of endemic seed-bearing plants, thanks to the isolation provided by the Pyrenee mountains.

Temperate rainforests can also be found in South America, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Ireland, and Scotland. Temperate rainforests get a lot of rain, up to 80 inches (200 cm). In some areas, such as Olympic National Park in Washington, the rainforest receives over 167 inches (425 cm) of rain per year. That's almost 14 feet (over 4 meters)!

Temperate forests have four seasons: spring, summer, winter, and fall. Because they are in the mid latitudes of the Earth — not too far south or north — they have a mild climate. Many other trees, shrubs, and grasses occupy subordinate positions. A sharp boundary separates the temperate sclerophyllous forests from the tropical and temperate rainforests of moister sites in the east. This abrupt transition is maintained by fire, which prevents or reverses invasion of the sclerophyllous forest by rainforest plants.
