When the tide is out vast lagoons, sandstone islets and a central mangrove island are revealed. The outward movement of the tide forms a loud torrent of water.

Montgomery Reef is a reef off the Kimberley coast of Western Australia. It is situated at the south western end of Camden Sound and surrounds Yawajaba (Montgomery) Island. With its total area of 400 square kilometres (154 sq mi) (about 80 kilometres (50 mi) in length), [1] it is the world's largest inshore reef. [2]

The magic of Montgomery Reef occurs on the outgoing tide, when a stunning phenomenon of whitewater rapids and cascading waterfalls is created and the huge reef appears to rise out of an endless ocean. It is a high energy environment - high velocity tidal flow off the reef can move up to two metres per second during spring tides! Figure 1.
